Broadway Cops

For a couple days these fliers were up around the neighborhood. They clean the fliers off lamp posts regularly, so I'm not sure if it was citizens, cops or the regular crews who took them down. Broadway is the major street close to where I live. I prefer to think they mean Broadway theaters in New York. Makes me smile. =)

Might not have updates for a couple weeks because I'll be heading home for the holidays as of this weekend. We'll see.

What Revolution?

There is a little independent book store around the corner from where we live. It is called Revolution Books. Justin posted this on his blog not too long ago, but since none of you read his blog, I'll repost. I took this picture the other day. I wanted to focus on the graffiti. It looks like someone removed the word "What", but you can still see it pretty well. I was able to get the sign in the shot as well.

Snow?

I thought I moved to Seattle to get away from this. The flakes are huge and the snow is sticking to everything but the ground. Consensus is that this is bizarre to be happening in Capitol Hill. I was out playing basketball when it started.

Household Items Sculpture

Across the street from the Mural on the Pike Street Bridge and right next to the Paramount theater are 3 big mesh people sculptures comprise of depictions of various household items. Easy to pick out are a comb, a spatula, a ring, a bottle and a coffee cup. There might be others, but I think that's about it. I particularly like the one on the left with the top hat and fancy suit jacket.

Qwest Field

I didn't get very good pictures. Marques and I went to the Bears vs. Seahawks game yesterday. I snapped some pictures with the intent of taking more and forgot. Anyway, the game was good and pretty exciting. I'm not a Bears fan, but since I wear a Cubs hat and jacket, people see me with Marques (Urlacher jersey) and assume. It is fun to be contrary, so I stuck with it. Plus the Bears fans are the ones who kept giving positive comments on my Cubs hat, so I appreciated that. The stadium is awesome. The big replay screen is really cool, plus because it is in SODO (south of downtown), it has a cool view of the city on one end, including Smith Tower (the white one in the middle, probably my favorite building in the city).

The Fountain at Cal

This is Cal Anderson, a great public park around the corner from our place. I go there to play basketball and go for walks. This is the cool fountain and the reflecting pools.

Hippies

"Hippies, they're all around me! They want to save the world, but all they do is smoke pot and smell bad." - Eric Cartman
This is written in the concrete (like when you write something before it hardens) and I pass it on my way to the park to play basketball. I've been shooting around almost every day for the past 2 weeks.

Mural on Pike Street Bridge

This is a long mural (60 feet or so) on the Pike Street Bridge to downtown from Capitol Hill. I end up walking by it once a week or so. It is so colorful and different. I keep meaning to go read some of the words on it to find out more, but haven't yet. I love all of the public art they have here in Seattle.

The Blue Angels

This is the view from the deck on the roof of our building. In July, during SeaFair, the Blue Angels were in town. They practiced during the week. They were incredibly close to our building. I was trying to work during the day and I had to postpone a call because I couldn't hear myself talk they were so loud. I went up to the roof to try to get some pictures. A couple of them turned out pretty well.

The Morning Mist

My favorite baseball quote is:

“People ask me what I do in the winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring.” - Rogers Hornsby (Cubs 2B & Manager 1929-1932)
Lately when I'm doing that, the scenery has been a little different. The morning fog has been crazy the last couple days. These are 2 pictures from my bedroom/office window, one in the morning and one later in the day. In the mornings, I can't see the downtown buildings. Yesterday, I couldn't see that yellow tree right after I got up. And the Commie College (Seattle Central), which is a block diagonal from my window was also encased in the mist. Eventually it cleared up all the way to be a perfectly clear day. The weather has been pretty awesome thus far. Everyone says the weather is unseasonably good for this time of year. Almost every day has been sunny at least in part. Because I get up so early and have a window office, I get to enjoy it.

General Seattle Pictures

I thought the first couple posts here could be just some scenery pictures of the city I (or people who visited me) have taken. Then it will be mostly just updates. I plan on weekly updates to the site, so you can bug me if I'm not keeping up my end of the bargain.

Seattle's favorite mountain, Mount Rainier as seen from Adrienne & Jessica's plane.

Seattle from the ferry boat to Bainbridge Island.

Coming back from Bainbridge with mountains in the background.

How I Became a Seattle Hoosier (part 1 of 2)

Let's start at the beginning. Here are a few pictures from when Dad and I drove out to Seattle from Indy. It was 2,600 miles and took us 3.5 days. We drove mostly straight through, but stopped at some fun stuff along the way. Here are the highlights of that trip. How I came to be a Seattle Hoosier.

Before the trip. Look how low the car is sitting! There wasn't room for so much as one more bag. It was packed tight.

My dad at Uranus (world's largest solar system model) in Pekin, IL.

Field of Dreams in Dyersville, IA was probably my favorite part of the trip. That was really fun.

Just outside of the Badlands in South Dakota.

I think this is where they filmed the moon landing. The Badlands were awesome.

More Badlands.

We went to Wall Drug in Wall, SD. I rode a Jackolope (which they seem to be obsessed with).

Dad belongs on Rushmore (also at Wall Drug).

The real Rushmore.

How I Became a Seattle Hoosier (part 2 of 2)

Devil's Tower, Wyoming was pretty cool, but not that tall. Look at how far I squished it down.

This is Big Horn mountain. The Hyundai Accent had some serious issues with this part of the trip. It smelled like burning and we had to pull over several times. It might have been worse than the Rockies.

But man, it was cool when we got to the top. Driving through the mountains was so much cooler than I thought it would be.

We got to Yellowstone that night. It was cool, but I didn't think the scenery was as good as some of the other places we went.

The cool part of Yellowstone was the wildlife. We saw a huge group of elk in a clearing. There were probably 20 of them. I really wanted to see a bear, but we never did. However, we ran across this big guy. He was just strolling across the road. Didn't seem to care about us at all. I'm pretty sure I could have ridden him, but we needed to get back on the road.

The next day we saw another one and I got close enough to pet him!

Then we were on the last leg of the trip. We hit Ol' Faithful. It was cool, but not as impressive as I'd hoped. Worth doing though. Then totally exhausted and sick of sitting in the car, we decided to drive straight through to Seattle without any more scenic detours.

Mt. Rainer, we're almost there!

And we finally made it. 2,600 miles in 3.5 days, but it wasn't wasted. It was an awesome trip and something everyone should experience.

First Post

So this is my first blog post from my iPhone. This blog is to be used to post images from my Seattle experiences. Examples would be interesting buildings, cool sculptures, street art, grafitti, etc. Most of these will be from my evening constitutionals. Because this will be set up for mobile blogging, please excuse the inevitable typos.
